The Fulbright Community

J. William Fulbright was a Senator for the U.S. State of Arkansas from 1945 until 1974. In 1946, he introduced a bill to Congress, which was later called the “Fulbright Act”. Through that bill, funds resulting from the sale of surplus U.S. military supplies were used to finance international academic exchange. The bill became the basis of the Fulbright program, named in his honor. On February 9, 1995, Senator Fulbright passed away at the age of 89.

The common goal of the German Fulbright Alumni Association and many partners nationally and internationally is to promote Senator Fulbright’s vision of peace achieved through intercultural understanding and gained by international academic exchange.

Since Senator Fulbright designed his “modest program” to be truly international, a worldwide network has come to life. Therefore, our association and our members are part of a global community of former Fulbright scholars.  Within this network of Fulbright Associations, the Fulbright Alumni e.V. plays a leading role in European cooperation.
